The year 1942.Under cover of darkness,a small group of people were gathering illegally in a cemetery,in Nazi-occupied Louvain,Belgium. They had come to disinter the body of an English airman whom they knew to have been tortured to death by the Gestapo and to give him a proper burial. One of those huddled there in horror at the young man's fate was Hortense Daman,a fifteen-year-old schoolgirl.Although she had already known what it was to be forced from her home by dive-bomb attacks from the Luftwaffe, this was when she first understood the terrible realities of war. Hortense's brother Francois had already gone underground to join the partisans and now she asked to work with him, first as a courier, then as a fighter in the Resistance. It was in the same cemetery, later, that she helped shoot a vicious Belgian collaborator.'CHILD AT WAR' is the story of Hortense Daman's amazing secret career,of her terrifying missions, her adventures and escapes; her eventual betrayal and capture, along with her parents,by the Gestapo.Imprisoned, tortured, condemned to die,she was sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp with her mother, but against all odds, they survived. After the war,Hortense married an English soldier and they now live in Staffordshire,England (then 1989).This is the first time that she has told the full story of her life,a story which represents not only a fascinating and inspiring aspect of the Second World War but also,in its examination of a child's reaction to an extraordinary situation, casts an interesting light on our own troubled times.
